1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9-by-13 inch pan with foil or parchment paper, extending the sides of the foil over the edges of the pan. Spray the foil lightly with cooking spray; set aside.

2. Combine the cake mix, 8 tablespoons melted butter, and 1 egg in a large bowl until fully incorporated. Press the dough evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan.

3. For the filling: Beat the cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer until fluffy, 1 minute. Beat in 3 eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the confectioners’ sugar, followed by the maple syrup, 4 tablespoons melted butter, and maple extract. Pour the filling mixture evenly over the crust.

4. Bake for 38 to 45 minutes or until the center is just about set. If it jiggles slightly, that’s okay—but you do not want to overbake it. Cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to firm up before cutting into squares.

5. Just before serving, garnish with a sprinkling of confectioners’ sugar or top with ice cream and maple syrup, if desired.
